Ariel is a fictional character and the protagonist of Walt Disney Pictures’ 28th animated feature, *The Little Mermaid* (1989). She also features in the film’s prequel television series (1992–1994), the direct-to-video sequel *The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea* (2000), and the prequel *The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning* (2008). Voiced consistently by Jodi Benson across all official animated appearances and merchandise, Ariel is notable for being the fourth Disney Princess, the first to be nonhuman, and the only princess to become a mother to her own child.
